For Paul,
coming from as far as he did with all of the twists and turns of his travels. Think of all the
various arguments that had happened between Paul and other apostles out sharing the gospel
with Gentiles. And that Paul wanted to go to Bithynia. And then they happened to go down to
that river right at the time that Lydia was there. For Lydia, based on what little we know about
her she was a busy woman. Selling expensive goods, being active in her religious life already,
she is like Mary and Martha melded into one. No, this meeting would never have happened had
one side or the other not been willing to listen and be led by the Holy Spirit.
And so by the power of the Holy Spirit, they are brought together. Paul shares the gospel, and
Lydia responds with faith through the act of receiving baptism. This intersection we see of God’s
goodness and faithfulness with the human act of willingness to listen is beautiful. As one
commentator says, “The longing heart of a faithful woman is opened by the gracious impulse of
a faith-giving God in an act that, like the incarnation itself, is at once fully human and fully
divine. Like Lydia we are astonished when, looking back, we can say only that our steps were
guided and our hearts opened.”
In both of my home countries right now, both in Germany and in the U.S., there are lots of
voices saying that this hospitality is unnecessary. Somehow people are even saying that it may be
unbiblical. That we should stay in our own little groups and protect what has been given to us.
Like the servant who buried his talent in the parable Jesus tells in Matthew 25, instead of using
what God has given us to do good works for him, voices in society are telling us that we should
be fearful of using our gifts for those around us. If you reread that parable, you will notice that
the servant who was told they are wicked and lazy says, “I was afraid and went out and hid your
gold in the ground.” Rather than being driven by curiosity, hospitality, and faith, the servant is
driven by fear, which is exactly the rhetoric we hear today.
But that is neither what God called Paul and Lydia to be, nor is that the calling for you and me.
These charges here are for all of us, no matter where we find ourselves in the world today. Three
things: that like Paul, we listen to the Holy Spirit when the Spirit calls. We step out into the
uncomfortable norms and be willing to try something new serving beside one another as Paul did
with his group of missionaries. Second, like Lydia, we need to be faithful in our gospel
hospitality. We must invite one another in and around our table. Listen to voices that sound
different than yours. And third, like both Lydia and Paul, we stand counter to the voices around
us and proclaim goodness, mercy, and kindness. We show others around us what it actually
means to be the beloved body of Christ by the way we interact with those in our congregations
and those we do not yet know.
Beloved, we are called just as Paul and Lydia. We are Christ’s co-heirs, held close to the heart of
God. Let’s witness, and like Lydia we will be astonished when, looking back, we can say only
that our steps were guided and our hearts opened.

Rev.

Over the past 12 years, I have experienced a welcoming denomination that celebrates unity in diversity. As a person of African descent, I have felt valued and included in a denomination where diversity is cherished, despite being part of a 2% racialized minority with only 10% of all ordained ministry personnel.
I have been privileged to serve in a senior role currently as Executive Minister for the Church in Mission Unit, where I continue to witness and experience the power of diversity and unity in action. The love and welcome I have received have been transformative, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this vibrant Church.
Therefore, as the United Church of Canada marks its centennial journey (June 2025) , it is clear that biblical and theological convictions about diversity and unity have been at the heart of its story. From its founding to its ongoing commitment to inclusion, justice, and community, the church has been guided by powerful scriptural themes.
One Body, Many Members
The Bible provides a rich foundation for embracing unity amid diversity. In 1 Corinthians 12:12-14, Paul beautifully illustrates the church as "one body with many members," emphasizing that each person brings unique gifts and perspectives that are essential to the whole. This vision has been a cornerstone of the United Church's identity, inspiring its formation in 1925 when Methodists, Congregationalists, and Presbyterians came together in a ground-breaking move that celebrated Christian unity.
This commitment to unity in diversity continues to shape the church's practices and mission today, reflecting the biblical call to be a community that values and celebrates the contributions of all its members.
Jesus’ ministry, as highlighted in United Church teachings, was marked by radical inclusion: “He crossed barriers of race, class, culture, and gender. He preached and practised unconditional love… and he commanded his followers to love one another as he had loved them”. This scriptural mandate underpins the United Church’s commitment to welcoming all, regardless of age, race, class, gender, orientation, or ability.
Theological Reflection and Institutional Practice
Theologically, the United Church has continually drawn from the biblical call to welcome “strangers in your midst” (Leviticus 19:34; Matthew 25:35). A major research study within the church emphasized that “Scripture reveals that the church must be prepared to examine and to make meaningful changes towards cultural inclusiveness in all areas of church polity and congregational life in order to provide a welcoming space for all, and in particular, visible minorities”.
This commitment is not merely theoretical. The church’s evolving identity has been shaped by ongoing self-examination, as seen in its apologies for its role in colonization and residential schools, and its active work toward reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. The inclusion of Indigenous spirituality and languages in church symbols and worship reflects the biblical vision that “the Gospel message is available to all peoples regardless of colour, race, creed or culture”.
Diversity as a Source of Renewal
The United Church’s journey toward intercultural ministry is informed by New Testament imperatives such as the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20) and the Pentecost story (Acts 1:8), which call the church to reach out across cultural and linguistic boundaries. A 2012 report to the General Council stated, “To focus only on policy solutions will never effect the kind of deep and transformative change for which we are striving. In addition, we are all being called to deeply examine our attitudes, values, and personal [sic] around difference—and risk doing things differently to create a better space of belonging for all”.
This theological openness has led the United Church to embrace new Canadians, visible minorities, and marginalized groups, seeing diversity as a way to “revitalize the community through the flow of fresh talent, and equip it for inclusiveness and growth”.

seres humanos.
manantial cuyas aguas nunca";.

hermanos que él «sube a mi Padre y a vuestro Padre» (Juan 20:17). Ya no somos siervos;

http://www.canaac.org/reflections/la-beaute-envoutante-de-levangile

http://www.canaac.org/reflections/la-beaute-envoutante-de-levangile#comments

Uncategorized

Perhaps God knew (knows) that I’m a stubborn creature who needs multiple reminders and time to reflect before I get the point. This year’s Lent came with Isaiah 58:1-12 as the source of my “haunting”.
At first I wondered about the line about “exploiting your workers” (Isaiah 58:3), thinking about the many ways in which we human beings still don’t treat each other as human beings. It even brought to mind the ways in which we tie our worth to our ability to be productive, which puts those of us with mental illnesses, chronic illnesses and disabilities at an inherent loss. Over and over, I hear from people whose survival has become too expensive – food, shelter, and health care have all become beyond their reach, despite their employed status.
Then I wondered about the “striking with fists” (Isaiah 58:4) and thought about the many women (and men) of our congregations and countries whose partners proudly go to church and proclaim Jesus as Lord but go home to abuse their family and others physically, sexually, mentally, emotionally, financially, and spiritually. There is no justice from the authorities. There is no safety in the spaces where they should have been space. The hypocrisy of it all can be sickening at times.
But then I got to the end of the passage which talks about being like a “watered garden, a spring of water whose waters never fail.” In John 20:15, Mary mistakes Jesus to be a gardener in his first sighting post-resurrection. Perhaps, she was not mistaken at all. Jesus, as the living waters and the one who does not even break a bruised reed, is one who brings nourishment and renewal in circumstances that seem bleak and beyond redemption. Jesus is the one who specially tends to those who are hungry, homeless, sick, oppressed and broken.
As Easter approaches, it is my hope that we do not drown in the despair of all that is broken in the world but perhaps commit to a life that brings Isaiah 58:12 into fruition. It may be our own act of resurrection as, “Ancient ruins shall be rebuilt” – rededicating ourselves to caring for each other as structures of community are rebuilt. We should “raise up foundations of many generations” in knowing the work we do today may never benefit us but will bless generations yet to come. We have a responsibility to be “repairer(s) of the breach” and so we cannot simply cut away that which is broken or makes us uncomfortable… our resurrected Lord forgave even those who crucified him on the cross and asks us to love our enemies.
Finally, we are called to be those who are “restorer(s) of the streets to live in” – to make a safe home where we can all dwell. Jesus says to Mary to tell his brothers that he is “ascending to my Father and your Father” (John 20:17). No longer are we servants; no longer are we even just friends; but Christ is indicating that we are family. We can live together in a new harmony built on the deep abiding love of Jesus Christ who binds us together.
I pray that this transitionary period from Lent into Easter is one that also contains scriptures that will “haunt” you and bless you abundantly!
